Issue caps have very cheap flat buckles like this that are simply friction slides to act against one of the loops on the ends of the two sections of the chinstrap. On the cap that started the this thread there a number of things wrong and it is tougher to put them into words than just look at it and yell "run!" but it is worth doing. In both cases the material was vetted by people who knew what they were doing. It does not have much text, but the photos are quite good. You should probably also have the Time Life volume Arms and Equipment of the Union. They have many good quality photos of real CW pieces. If you are interested in collecting Civil War headgear your first purchase should be US Army Headgear 1812-1872 by Langellier and Loane. ![]()
